A true love story:
This was the second marriage for both. He was a divorced bad boy, finalizing plans to take off for Alaska. She was an elegant widow, making her way through life's hard realities.
They both happen to attend a dance, each loving the music, laughter, and getting together with friends. He asked her to dance and Alaska was forgotten.
They married months later. I often wonder how many surprises she had when the uglies of his past reared their heads. Through the years it was apparent for all to see. She adored him, and he treated her with respect, honor, and he loved her.
In their later years health issues took up the majority of their days. They soldered on when he could no longer see and she became so fragile.
One day he lost his balance and fell. She couldn't move fast enough to catch him. The helicopter was called in to take him to the trauma center. The damage to his brain was immense. The two broken vertebrae were serious. She touched his face and spoke of love and strength. For the first time in their lives, he didn't respond.
On the second day after the fall the doctors began to prepare her for the future. Her eyes grew wide. Her skin paled. Reality cut deep into her soul.
That evening she spoke to a friend of the phone, expressing her fears. "I don't know what I will do without..." The phone went silent. She never finished her sentence. She left this world.
Two days later his body succumbed to the horrible injuries. In the last seconds of his life, he looked up, and there was sight in his eyes. Was she holding out her hand to him? We think so.
Goodbye Daddy and his Love.
