His belly burned and blood dripped from the claw marks raking his skin from hip to hip. The giant Kodiak bear’s teeth clamped down on his thigh sending searing pain slicing through the meat of his leg. Robin managed to grab his green velvet dress jacket off the bed and pulled the small handgun from the pocket. He jammed the tip of the barrel into the bear’s eye socket and pulled the trigger until the gun was almost empty. One bullet was reserved for himself in case he couldn’t get out of the mess.
The bear collapsed to the floor, it massive weight rattling the windows of the motel room. Except for Robin’s ragged pants, silence blanketed the room.
Robin withdrew from the world. He blocked out the animal lying at his feet. There was nothing more he could do to defend himself if the bear was still alive. No pain strangled his movements and meant his injuries were severe and shock was setting in. He ignored the huge weights settling in his limbs and the need to close his eyes. Sleep would happen when he found a safe place to rest. The commotion of the trashed room and gunshots would have someone calling the police. Robin needed to get out of the room, city, and surrounding area.
Rainbow tinged spots danced all around when he turned to reach for his clothes strewn across the bed. He leaned on the edge of the mattress and concentrated on pulling the long dark-green skirt with a slit up the side over his high heeled black pumps. If his teeth weren’t chattering together so hard, he’d laugh that throughout the battle for life he’d kept his shoes on. Robin staggered but managed to arrange the material around his waist and close the zipper. Robin slid on the jacket, picked up the gun, and returned it to the pocket.
Warm blood seeped down his legs under the skirt and soaked into the waistband. He pushed away his revulsion of the wet stickiness. He took a deep breath and concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other.
Time to disappear.
